2009's Best (In My Opinion)

2009 was a bitter sweet year overall. Mr. Obama was sworn in as the first African-American President of the United States, and Michael Jackson died (damn, that hurts every time). Hip-hop was ok. A lot of the laffy taffy shit finally left the airwaves, but that then opened the door for auto-tune rappers.

Then, Jay-Z kind of killed that vibe with D.O.A. It seems as if a sense of respect for lyrics and artistry have returned in 2009. I can only imagine what 2010 will be like. Here are the albums and mixtapes that I felt did justice to the Hip-Hop game (in some shape or form) this year:

1. Raekwon feat. Ghostface Killah- “Only Built for Cuban Linx II”

2. Jadakiss & Green Lantern-“The Camp Is Here Pt. 2: Kiss My Ass”

3. Mos Def- “Ecstatic”

4. Jay-Z- ““The Blueprint 3″“

5. Ghostface Killah- “The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City”

6. Joell Ortiz- “Road Kill” mixtape

7. Clipse- “Till the Casket Drop”

8. Lil Wayne- “No Ceilings” mixtape

9. M.O.P.- “Foundation”

10. Slaughterhouse- “Slaughterhouse”

Honorable Mentions:

Eminnem “Relapse”

Doom “Born Like This”

Wu-Tang presents “Chamber Music”

Until 2010….

HipHopForNerds.com Top 5 Rap/Hip-Hop Albums of 2009 List

Jay-Z – “The Blueprint 3″ Is Our Album Of The Year Pick!

These lists are never easy to make, yet so easy to debate. The world of hip-hop is becoming so large that it’s pretty impossible to make any sort of universally accepted list. If you have followed this blog though, you should already have an idea of what my list will look like. HipHopForNerds.com has been a supporter of mostly mainstream hip-hop, as well as some independent stuff that you have probably never heard before. With that said, certain artists did not make it onto this blog or into this list because they simply were not in the pool of candidates I listened to. I listen to everything I can, but I know there are probably albums I have missed. Feel free to comment if you feel I’ve omitted an artist who should truly be in the top 5. With that said, here is my list of best rap albums of 2009.

1. Jay-Z – The Blueprint 3

I know the haters are gonna be mad about this one. I don’t really know why anyone expected a 40 year old man to release an album for the streets, but that has pretty much been the big criticism. Critics call this “white collar rap”, but it’s a lyrically eye opening album if you actually listen to the words. For once, Jay is taking a stand against some of the stupidity he once stood for. He tells us why all the things he once thought were cool are no longer cool, and he shares the story of how a poor drug dealer from Brooklyn became a global star. The production of the album puts this above Eminem’s Relapse on my list, and is definitely my favorite album of 2009. It is good music for anyone who cares to be successful in life. If you consider it bragging, well, Jay has a right to brag.

2. Eminem – Relapse

Relapse is not the best album of Eminem’s career, but it beats out his previous two (Encore & The Re-Up), and should be considered as an appetizer to what I anticipate will be the best album of his career in Relapse 2. Eminem sounded like a man only beginning to reach his prime on this album. Ever since he quit drinking and drugs, his flow has gotten quicker and more crisp. You could tell he had some rust to shake off, and a few of these tracks are filler material in his overall catalog, but if you’ve heard The Refill, you already know he’s only getting better. Expect Eminem to hold the top spot on next year’s list, but until then, go get that Refill!

3. Rick Ross – Deeper Than Rap

Ricky Ross didn’t receive the greatest review from me when the album initially dropped, but in hindsight, this really is a good album. Lyrically it’s nothing mind blowing, but the replay value, production, guest features, and energy of the album make it one of this year’s best. Add that to the fact that Ross nearly outsold 50 Cent’s album in the first week, and you’ve got an emerging star here. Can Ross keep it up next year? I have a feeling we’ve heard his best work already, but maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised by another one.

4. Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon: The End Of Day

Is it possible that being born and raised in Cleveland led to my inclusion of this album on my list? Possibly. The more likely reason though is that Cudi dominated the rookie class of 09 with his music and sales this year. Man On The Moon was the highest selling album of anyone in XXL magazine’s top 10 freshman list, and was one of the best selling rap albums of 2009 in general. It is very artsy and slow paced, but when your mood is down and you need some musical therapy, this album should do the trick. It was an impressive rookie release, and Cudi will likely shine again as it appears his label is already granting him a second album packed with even more star power.

5. MIMS – Guilt

If I went around the streets polling people on their top rap albums of the year, MIMS’ album probably wouldn’t even be on most top 20 lists. With that said, most people also haven’t given this album a chance. MIMS is the type of rapper who always releases fun, shallow, danceable singles which degrade his credibility, but his albums usually tell a different story. Guilt is one of my favorite albums this year because of it’s diversity and creativity. MIMS explores the rock genre just enough to add an alternative feel to the album, and you can tell he really made this one from the heart. This album should not be slept on. It hasn’t left my rotation since it dropped, and if you think I’m crazy, at least give it a listen.

Eminem.

Is freaking amazing. You know it I know it. He has been through many hard times and still gets through it all. He had a shitty childhood. But he never let that stop him. His music is good. And is REAL RAP! Yeah, He probably has some screws up in his head loose, But it’s better then what’s happening your your parents bedroom. Lol. I love him alot! I never met him, But I hope to one day get the chance to just tell him How great I think he is. Anyways. If you wanna hate on Slim Shady keep your freaking comments to yourself cause honestly NO ONE CARES. He is amazing. Rich. Successful. Awesome. Sick. Twisted. Amazing. And you will never be half of what he is :)

Another GenXer bites the dust

This time a younger one.

Brittany Murphy at the age of 32. That’s my wife’s age. Yikes!

Of course, Brits got her start in the movie Clueless, directed by Amy Heckerling the creator of one of the all time great GenX flicks, Fast Time at   Ridgemont High, which launched the career of Sean Penn and laid bare a side of Phoebe Cates for which I an countless other GenX guys will be forever grateful.

She was also in 8 Mile with Eminem, which is about my old stomping grounds.  In fact, I grew up less than a mile from the trailer park where they shot some of the scenes for 8 Mile. I used to ride my BMX bike through that trailer park to get to the one next to it becase my buddy Rick lived there.

Repots are saying that Murphy died of cardiac arrest, which of course sounds like perhaps an eating disorder (she’d gotten really thin) and/or drugs. Wow! Shocker.

I swear I’m trying to think of something else to say but I’m drawing a blank. I didn’t dislike Brits but wasn’t a huge fan either. I was, however, a fan of some of the movies she was in — Clueless, 8 Mile, Sin City.

RIP Brits.

NEXT!

The Best Albums of 2009

It’s that time of year when self-absorbed bloggers and music geeks prepare their Top 10 Albums of the Year lists. Of course, the mainstream media trots out Beyonce and U2 while the hipsters try to out-obscure each other by only choosing albums by artists that no one has ever heard of. I guess I’m somewhere in between, so some of you will find my list a bit too mainstream (Pearl Jam, Jay-Z) while others of you will raise an eyebrow at the lesser-known stuff (Polvo? Magnolia who?).

Since I couldn’t narrow it down to just 10 albums, I cheated creatively by breaking it into categories plus two Top 10’s. It doesn’t matter. I think there are more albums on this list than there are readers of this blog.

Amazon Leaks Lil Wayne Album

Just one week ago when Birdman announced Wayne’s upcoming rock album Rebirth was pushed back to be released in February 2010, Santa brings us fans an early Xmas present.

A distributor under Amazon.com has accidentally released the album which is not supposed to be out for another 2 months. Perhaps it was because of the six date changes or the confusing statements of Birdman, many lucky customers who had the album pre-ordered were happy to open their mailbox to a rare actual Lil Wayne album. Many customers, who pre-ordered the album, have commented on the Amazon site whether or not they received the album or not. Amazon has not yet released a statement about the incident but have predicted that 500 copies of the album were delivered.

While some lucky ones received the album today, all the albums that were on their way are being shipped back to Amazon. If you are not one of the few customers who received the premature shipped album, you can enjoy his newest track with Eminem here.

Royce Da 5’9” Sends Shots at Benzino and Canibus

“Benzino, the hardest n*gga, you don’t know him for hammers/ You know him for talkin sh*t with Nore behind the cameras/ I blam at cha and damage ya.”

Royce Da 5’9” is clearly a rapper that delivers on his promises.  When he announced the release of Bar Exam 3, he issued a warning to those that had foul words for him or his crew.  Starting with his own rendition of “Back By Popular Demand”, the time for revenge is now at he sets his sights first on Benzino and Canibus.

Benzino recently had some words about Slaughterhouse making the statement that the group was overrated and that Made Men would basically lay waste to them in a rap battle.  He even took is as far as releasing the diss record “Good Fellaz” going at the group along with his former nemesis Eminem dropping line such as:

“I can’t be vibin’ with them n*ggas, that’s a dead issue/ He wasn’t so official ‘til I started f*cking with you/ Too overated, what I’m saying might be fraud to them/ They bring that bacon to my house I have to Slaughter ‘em.”

Nickel also stepped in for his friend Eminem with some jabs to Canibus who recently threw some shots at Shady with “Air Strike”.

With two down, who else will have crosshairs aimed at their bodies for Nickel to pull the trigger on?

Eminem - Music Box

I’m sorry Interscope this is the LAST one .. I promise lol .. This record is so crazy I had to post it .. I don’t get how this was a leftover from Relapse? I guess it does sound a bit like “Stay Wide Awake” .. But I still would have put on this record .. “Relapse: Refill” in stores Dec. 21 .. Pick it up!

Time for a Refill

Off of Eminem’s re-release of his latest album Relapse, simply titled ‘Relapse: Refill’ comes two of the seven new tracks.  The First is a typical Slim Shady song where he raps with his ‘accent’ and is more or less a song about murder and his darker side, titled ‘Buffalo Bill’.  The second track, Elevator, is a more Eminem song with a nice beat, even some singing on the hook (not quite Hailie’s Song) but nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to Eminem.  Relapse: Refill due out December 21st!  Shouts to TCO

Eminem Gets Complex!

complex_eminem_cover_blog625

Eminem graces the cover of December/ January issue of Complex Magazine.

Story by Noah Callahan-Bever; Photography by Matt Doyle; Styling by Anoma Ya Whittake

“I just met Eminem again, for the first time in 10 years. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve spoken at least a half-dozen times since our initial introduction back in May of ‘98, when I interviewed him for BLAZE Magazine. But the guy I dealt with in those intervening years? Well, he was a different person. The dude I met in that strip mall parking lot more than a decade ago, listening to mixes on the stock system of his Buick rental, was outgoing, hilarious, genuine, razor-sharp, and endlessly talented. He was a walking adventure and an inspiration. But, with him being overwhelmed by the fame—and then the work, and then the drugs—every encounter we shared after the release of The Slim Shady LP got incrementally more awkward, involved less eye contact, and left me feeling more concerned about the collateral damage of his unmitigated success. “

Continue reading the insightful interview here ‘Relapse Refill’ is out December 22nd.

Jay-Z snob Em et 50Cent aux AMA'09.

Jay vs Fifty

Bye, Stan.

Me.

Not too soon

I was very, very disappointed with Dot Rottens latest release “R.I.P Young Dot”. After his first mixtape, and his excellent work on the O.G’s mixtape “O.G season” this was a  terrible let down. Although i never really rated Dot as one of the top mc’s (he’s at times been a bit to monotonous for my taste) i did rate him as one of the top producers. “R.I.P Young Dot” was the sound of Dot totally loosing it. No it wasn’t one of the worst grime mixtapes made, far from, but it was a  frustrating and boring failure. And after that most of what i heard from Dot, on various youtube vids, was him continuing the very odd theme he started on with “I’m a leader”, some sort of melancholy autotune gone berserk.

For these reasons i didn’t have too high expectations on the release of S.O.O.N. I was really just hoping Dot wouldn’t have gone further down a strange route of undistinguished run-of-the-mill tracks with some autotune singing in the chorus. Fortunately it seems Dot has gotten his head if not completely at least partly back in the game.  It’s obvious already on the first track “Mr baker/Crazy Comments” (after having to listen to a rather annoying attempt at humor from “Mr baker”) that Dot has highly improved his mc skills, both lyrically and flow wise. Here he comes like a grime Eminem, high pitched, fast spitting, fast rhyming, wisecracking. But als0 in more conventional grime mode he’s flow is vastly improved and convey far more emotion than on earlier works, even without crying out in a burst of auto-tune.

But most importantly Dot seem to have recovered his skills as a producer. At times this mixtape burns with creative skill, on more melancholy tracks like “The days”, “Best of me” and “No one knows”, ferocious tracks like “Show me respect” and “Talking the hardest” or simply, in grime terms, refreshingly original tracks like “Two step non step”, and “I’m not stopping”.  At best Dot has a imaginative gifted touch, a innovative and unique style so desperately needed in todays grime.

Some thing are not as good. While in general being ok, moody tracks “I’m  a professional” and “The days” makes me cringe, or occasionally makes me giggle to myself when Dot goes in hard with the autotune singing. It really does sound ridiculous. On “Best of me” i totally loose it, it’s just too fucking weird. Also the guest are not up to the quality of the members of O’G’s he used to spar with, but are  mostly pretty colorless. Only exceptions are Ice Kid, who has two great chilling verses and Voltage, who does well on his own on great bonustrack “No one knows”.

However, this is not a album, but apparently the mixtape before next mixtape, or the album, that will or will not arrive any day now, which may explain a few odd choices. First of all, 22 tracks is too many. 22 tracks is proof you don’t have proper quality control. Theres no reason to have that many tracks. I’d say 15 tracks maximum, give the others away on compilations or as free downloads or whatever. Also most of the tracks not produced by Dot feels out of place and hurt the consistency of the mixtape, none of the Faith SFX tracks are particularly good, Terror Danjahs “Ride for me”  is a quite boring commercial lovesong, only “Theres more to life” over Dizzee Rascals “Brand new Day” really feel at place. There are also some tracks i don’t see any point at all having on here. Brutal’s “Cheating” is hideous, so is “Sex time” with Griminal and Brutal. Please someone explain to me why i would want to hear about other men fucking.

With half the number of tunes i might have considered this a grime classic. It contains at least six or seven tracks i will hold as among the best of 2009. This is the sound of a artist, a artist who’s  found his way home, still perhaps on shaky legs, but with perhaps more promise than anyone i can see in the scene at the moment. I just keep my fingers crossed and hope that he will stay clear of the autotune and the dreadful lovesongs.

One from the Vault: Eminem Cover

May 2000: Eminem releases his second full-length album, The Marshall Mathers LP, to critical acclaim. The closing track is “Criminal”.

May 2007: While recording in Norfolk, England, Glass and Cornelius decide to embellish their mutual love of The Marshall Mathers LP by covering “Criminal”, using only a 100-year-old upright piano, Glass’s golden vocal chords, and an over-enthusiastic melodica.

November 2009: Glass and Cornelius decide to dust off said cover from the archives, and release it to the general public.

Below is the original song – if you’re not familiar with it, might I suggest giving it a listen first, to truly appreciate the bold, fresh artistic direction that we took the song in for the cover.

And now, our take on the hip-hop masterpiece:

DISCLAIMER: hopefully this is unnecessary, but we would like to point out that all lyrical content in both versions is Eminem’s, not ours – especially the homophobic stuff, which is most of the song. We’re an open-minded bunch here at the casa Royal Native, and this is meant to be a joke, so please don’t go taking it seriously!

And need I remind you, that our EP is being released to the wide world this coming Monday? These are exciting times. Keep an eye out for fresh songs, and a couple you may have heard before…

SUPERSTAR HIP-HOP ARTIST RELEASES HIS CHART-TOPPING ALBUM RELAPSE WITH FIVE UNRELEASED TRACKS TO TIDE FANS OVER TILL RELAPSE 2

Multi-platinum hip-hop artist Eminem will release Relapse: Refill on December 21ST, 2009, on Aftermath/Interscope Records. This re-release of Eminem’s chart-topping fifth studio album includes seven bonus tracks, including the single “Forever”, also featuring Drake, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne (previously found on the More Than A Game soundtrack), “Taking My Ball” (also released only with the DJ Hero video game), and five never-before-heard tracks.??

“I want to deliver more material for the fans this year like I originally planned” Eminem says. “Hopefully these tracks on The Refill will tide the fans over until we put out Relapse 2 next year”. Eminem has been busy in the studio creating even more new material since Relapse was released. “I got back in with Dre and then a few more producers, including Just Blaze, and went in a completely different direction which made me start from scratch. The new tracks started to sound very different than the tracks I originally intended to be on Relapse 2, but I still want the other stuff to be heard.” ??

One of the most anticipated albums of the year, the platinum-selling Relapse entered the Billboard Top 200 album chart at No. 1 in May 2009 and sold more than 618,000 domestic copies in the U.S. in its first week. Relapse is also the top selling hip-hop album of 2009. The first song to debut from the album, “Crack a Bottle”, was released in February and set a first-week record for digital sales at the time, while the first official single and video, “We Made You”, debuted in April. The best-selling hip-hop artist of the SoundScan era, Eminem has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide. His previous studio album, Encore, reached No. 1 and dominated the charts in late 2004. The Grammy-nominated disc was certified quadruple-platinum, generated four Top 40 Hot 100 hits, and has sold more than 11 million copies. In October 2008, Eminem published Eminem: The Way I Am, a compilation of thoughts, stories and memorabilia that entered the New York Times bestseller list at No. 11.

Current November Status

(This idea blatantly stolen from France, FTW!)

Current Books: Can I tell you a secret? It takes me forever to read a book. I always have several going at one time and it can take me years (hello, The Fountainhead) to finish one. Right now I’m in the middle of Dead Until Dark, The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon and A Homemade Life.

Current Playlist: I’m always adding to my beats playlist and recently started compiling a Christmas playlist. Recent iTunes purchase include ’Till I Collapse (Eminem), Forever (Drake), Replay (Iyaz), Go Tell It On the Mountain (Jim Nabors) and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee). Yes, I’m kind of a Top 40 whore.

Current Guilty Pleasure: Hershey’s Kisses at work. I don’t usually eat sweets at the office, but my boss bought me a bag and I can’t say no to Hershey’s chocolate.

Current Color: Black. When in doubt, I always go for black. Or green (but not dark green).

Current Drink: Water, Mountain Dew (I allow myself one can a day during the week) and this fantastic raspberry pomegranate juice I found last week at the grocery store. SO good.

Current Food: I’ve been eating a lot of pasta e ceci over the past 10 days. I’m also obsessed with Snyder’s of Hanover Sourdough Nibblers.

Current Favorite Show: I can never pick a favorite. Also, please don’t judge me based on my fascination with “reality” stars. That said, these days I always tune in to Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, The Real Housewives of Orange County, The Hills, Fringe, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters.

Current Wishlist: A car made in this decade. King-size flannel sheets. A bed frame. T-shirts from mental_floss.

Current Needs: Nada

Current Triumphs: Taking care of the car situation by myself without hyperventilating. Actually, taking care of just about everything by myself  since September 14.

Current Bane Of My Existence: Brian being away. I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about it, but it’s true.

Current Celebrity Crush: Ed Westwick, Mark Ruffalo, Joshua Jackson … and mayyyyyyybe Justin Bobby. That guy is a total dbag, but way easy on the eyes.

Current Indulgence:  Is this different than my current guilty pleasure? OK, pizza rolls and ice cream. I’m trying to clear out all the bad (read: unhealthy) crap from my freezer … by eating it.

Current Blessing: My whole life is a blessing. Love, work, food on the table and a roof over my head.

Current Slang: A compendium of words and phrases I’ve picked up over the years. Examples include “super pissed with cheese” and “your mom.”

Current Outfit: Black North Face fleece jacket, magenta V-neck sweater, jeans, Montrail hiking boots

I was never a fan of Eminem

growing up. I didn’t listen to hip-hop much at all except stuff like Nelly and Puffy that was played on Z-100. I was a bit of a lame, if you would care to say. But I started actually listening to Eminem this past Spring I suppose, when I was living back in NB. And the thing that makes him so good, so much better than so many other rappers, is not his albums or his edginess or his public persona or the clothes he wears or the banners he puts up around NYC. It’s the fact that he has actual lyrical skill, that he approaches rap as a craft and works to perfect and improve it. Lil Wayne did this for a little while when he was still on the mixtape circuit, but even then he was highly prone to reusing verses and his rhymes were fairly simplistic and he didn’t really work at flow acceleration or internal rhyme schemes or anything like that. But Eminem does. What makes him so much better than so many people is not what he puts out, it’s the work he does that never reaches the public’s ears…

Eminem to star in 3D film 'Shady Talez'

Eminem is set to produce and star in a forthcoming 3D horror film ‘Shady Talez’, it has been revealed.

Producer John Davis and writer-producer Dallas Jackson, who worked on ‘I, Robot’, will helm the movie along with the rapper, reports Screendaily.com.

Kevin Grevioux, who wrote the ‘Underworld’ film, will write the script alongside Jackson. The project will also be released as a series of four comic books next year on the Marvel Icons imprint.

A release schedule for the film is yet to be announced. Eminem’s last big screen appearance was in his semi-autobiographical movie ‘8 Mile’.

Eminem to star in 3-D horror film

Eminem

From PTINews.com

Rapper Eminem is about to give his rap career a new turn as he is set to act in a 3-D hip-hop horror movie named ‘Shady Talez’.

The 37-year-old performer will star in the film which is a horror anthology described as a cross between ‘Creep Show’ and vintage TV programme ‘The Twilight Zone’, reported BBC.

Announced last year, ‘Shady Talez’ will feature three stories offering a hip-hop spin to classic horror films.

The film is being produced by DJ Classicz, a division of Davis Entertainment, the US company behind the ‘Garfield’ and ‘Aliens vs Predator’ movies.

Since Eminem, also known as alter-ego Slim Shady, loves comic books and horror flicks, the project will also incorporate a four-issue ‘Shady Talez’ comic book series, due out in 2010.

The rapper, real name Marshall Bruce Mathers III, topped charts on both sides of the Atlantic earlier this year with his latest album ‘Relapse’.

That Thing You Do! and Pop Radio's Effect on Me in the Mid to Late 90s

What a great movie. I can’t think of a better film that captures everything I love about life. That’s an overstatement, but if you’ve seen this flick, you know what I’m talking about. It just makes you feel good, and not in a cop-out, blockbuster sort of way. It was made well with one of Hollywood’s few “white knights” (ahem, Tom Hanks).

My favorite scene? In the studio towards the end, when Guy jams with Del Paxton (I hope I’m not ruining it, but if you, Constant Reader, haven’t seen this movie…well, you probably wouldn’t be reading this little blog because the universe where you live that doesn’t include That Thing You Do! is a universe where I do not and will not exist). That scene helped shape my desire to create music, to contribute something creative and artistic to this world even if only a few people heard it.

Guy loved music. That’s why he was the main character. The good guy. The one that could do no wrong. Jimmy, as Mr. White (Tom Hanks) said, was the talent. He didn’t appreciate music as much as Guy, because he had that natural ability to write a great song and yeah, it went to his head. Who wouldn’t want to be engaged to a gal like Liv Tyler, or at least a gal that was played by Liv Tyler? Seriously. Todd Rundgren was her legal guardian for Something/Anything?’s sake!

I can’t say that any aspect of this film is bad. The theme song, written by the great Mike Viola (who produced Mandy Moore’s Amanda Leigh) and Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne fame), is a course in classic pop songwriting. Never mind Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” “That Thing You Do!” has stood the test of time.

Side Note: By the way, do you know how many times we listened to “My Heart Will Go On” in Spanish in 5th grade? I don’t know! I don’t remember! Which means that it was more than once. That was back when I was living and breathing pop music on the radio. Kiss FM (106.1 ya’ll), Hot 100 (100.3, the more “urban” Kiss FM), you know what I’m talking about, Southlake, TX. I distinctly remember that Kiss FM was playing an alternate version of “My Heart Will Go On” with actual quotes from Titanic. The same thing happened with Bruce Springsteen’s “Secret Garden” when Jerry McGuire came out. And people ate it up! I’m making an assumption here, because I ate it up and I heard it all the time.

I think my first experiences with certain emotions came from Pop radio. Heartache (is that even an emotion?) was one of them. My Mom was driving me to hockey practice. What did my heart ache about? I don’t know. But “Genie in a Bottle” was making me long for someone. It wasn’t even someone. It was just some entity, some idea. This feeling of being caught up in an interaction with a girl that went beyond the scope of cootie resistance.

Pop music in the late 1990s had created this void inside me. The music was telling me “you have to find a girl and love on her and get her to love on you…and by love on, we mean awkwardly slow dance with her at the next middle school extracurricular socializing event.” All the while, I’m thinking “Okay, just as soon as I get frosted tips, start shopping at Structure, and try out for one of the four football teams.” So Pop music is the leading cause to coupling. Interesting.

Another emotion I first felt through Pop radio was Aggression. I think it came when “Forgot About Dre” hit the airwaves. It was 7th grade. And for some reason, the song resonated with me. It wasn’t about feeling a connection with the subject matter then. Did I have any idea what it felt like to be bombarded by younger rappers trying to upstage and replace me? No. It was more about feeling cool. My parents let me get the edited version of Chronic 2001 at Wal-Mart. I don’t know why. Maybe I made a fuss? Maybe they weren’t aware of the album’s content? What I do know is that I wanted to have sex/have slightly-more-than-platonic relations with as many attractive girls as possible at that age. And by knowing a song that Eminem rapped on, I’d be in the right direction.

Side, Side Note:I had to scratch my head for a minute about the continuity here. If Chronic 2001 would have actually come out in 2001, I would have been in 9th grade, well into my post-punk/ska phase. But alas, Dr. Dre’s masterpiece came out in 1999, putting me in 7th Grade with a lot to lose and a lot to gain, workin my way up the middle school food chain. See that? I came up with that rhyme just now.

Wow. That Thing You Do! to Chronic 2001. This single post covered just about everything you wanted to learn today/night.

Well, I’ve run out of steam here at Minutiae Music Land. As you can tell, this was a very stream-of-conscious post, but I plan on revisiting the topic of Pop radio in the 1990s because I think it was pretty integral to my growth as a humanitarian/man of the people/songwriter/regular dude just trying to bide his time.

And by the way, in all seriousness: Dawes’ North Hills is on constant playback here at the Great Pagoda of Fun(n). And also Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons’ Death Won’t Send a Letter. Both are very nice albums that make me hopeful for the future. And I say this, because you, Constant Reader, are hear to seek out my guiding light (read: my opinion on contemporary music).

EMA 2009 - Winners (vencedores)

Falo de Cold Play, The Veronicas, Muse, Kings of Leon, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, The Killers, Paramore, Foo Fighters, entre outros…

Cypher - Mos Def, Emimen, Black Thought

SAY WORD!

Usually, I won’t watch BET, I really don’t see that much progression in it’s programming, the only recent good news I heard was the are bringing the sitcom series The Game back to primetime so that’s cool, with that being said, BET holds there annual Hip-Hop Awards in which the bright light is the cypher that the hold showcasing major lyricist in the game with an ol’ skool beat being blazed by each rapper’s verbal blessings.

One section had a crazzy line-up with Mos Def (Brooklyn), Black Thought (Philly) and Eminem (Detroit). Let’s just say that, I’ve watched this YouTube video over 10x already

News: Jay-Z Questions Eminem's Absence From MTV's "Hottest In The Game" List

Jay-Z & Eminem

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Jay-Z has shared his reaction to MTV’s “Hottest MC’s In The Game” listing him at number one and questioned why Grammy-winning rapper Eminem lost out to artists including Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy.

According to Hov, Em should have been considered within the Top 10 especially due to his platinum-selling Relapse album.

“MTV, Thanx for this nod of appreciation,” he wrote in a statement. “Although I don’t strive to be ‘hot’ for any particular year, I thank you for the acknowledgment. My whole goal is to be recognized as the best ever. I created the term ‘best rapper alive’ as a sign of respect to my fallen comrades (Biggie and Tupac). I believe I’ve allowed a significant grace period, and I believe I would not be respecting myself if being the absolute best was not my goal, and that’s why I continue to push myself until exhaustion … salute. Sidebar: Kanye moment if I may … Eminem?!?! I think you do the credibility of this list a disservice if you don’t thoroughly explain his omission. As of this second he has the highest selling rap album of the year and a scene stealing verse on the best ‘posse’ cut of the year . (*Hands mic back to Taylor Swift … and nobody was harmed, I apologize in advance.)” (Rap Radar)

MTV has issued a response to the public’s reaction toward Em’s absence from the list.

Eminem’s ranking was one of the most discussed topics at the Roundtable. His hotly anticipated return to hip-hop after a long absence drove first week sales of over 600,000 – the highest first-week of the year so far. He granted a handful of select interviews here and abroad, and was part of a massive moment with Sacha Baron Cohen at the MTV Movie Awards. But then Em retreated to the lab, where he spent the summer crafting Relapse 2. From June to September, Em all-but took himself out of the public eye, while other MCs generated week-to-week heat with mixtapes, guest appearances, performances and Web activity. (M Live)

Rappers like Maino initially questioned how certain rappers could make the cut who have not released music as of late.

“Some of these people ain’t had a record in years,” Maino said while reviewing the list. “Is it based off record sales? Is it based off presence in the game? You got n*ggas on here that can’t even rap. I don’t claim to be this or that, I don’t claim to be this nice or that nice, I’m just one of the realest n*ggas in the world — Two straight summers I held down and there’s a couple of these n*ggas that ain’t had a summer song since 90-something. How you on the list of hottest in the game today, some of them should be hottest in the game overall or past years, no disrespect to some of them on the list but you got legends that did what they did and paved the way for me but at the same time, if you not relevant today — then how are you on ‘The Hottest MC’s In The Game’ list? They almost try to paint the perception of if you’re not on the list, you’re not hot.” (This Is 50)

50 Cent expressed his discontent with the annual list in an interview around 2007.

“I didn’t see [the list] but they asked me about it,” Fif said in an interview with DJ Clue. “Well you know, these c*ck suckers — it’s terrible man, it’s almost impossible for you to maintain a position without just being a total idiot. God made all of us, so he knows to give me special attention — [MTV personality] Sway should just jump in front of a bus on his way up here man for doing that — he’s a meathead. They’re not using their brains anymore, man. There’s a difference between a guy that has eight records and a guy whose built consistency.” (Power 105)

MTV's Hottest MC's in game list

I have a little problem with MTV’s Top 10 Hottest in the game, how about you?

1) Jay-Z

2) Lil Wayne

3) Drake, Really

4) Kanye West

5) Rick Ross

6) Gucci Mane, Really

7) Young Jeezy

Fabolous

9) 50 Cent

10) Raekwon, Really

How the hell does Drake, Gucci Mane & Raekwon make the list? In my personal opinion these three shouldn’t be on this list at all it’s no knock on them but for the way that mtv did this list you sgould have put Jadakiss, Eminem & Ghostface on this list instead of those three. What has Raekwon done recently that made tem think he deserves to be on this list? Nothing I have heard his latest album & this is the best one he has put out since Only built for Cuban lynx. I like Raekwon but he should be replaced by one of the three that I named. Gucci Mane is semi hot right now but not hot enough to where he should be ahead of the one’s that I named. Ghostface has kept busy pumping out albums & for the most part they all have been good. Jadakiss is really one of the most slept on artist ever just because he doesn’t get the record sales that he deserves shouldn’t keep him off the list. Drake is hot right now, right now but remember that’s not what the list is. I think Drake is very talented but he sounds like Wayne to me & his songs sound a like to me. Those of you that actually read what I write no that I am not an Eminem fan at all but how the hell do you leave him off of this list? Especially when he has put out as many albums as Raekwon in the last year ? This list was crazy as hell Jay, Wayne, Jeezy, Kanye & Fabolous I am cool with even though I am not a Lil Wayne fan either but I really could have done without 50 & Rick Ross I wouldn’t pull them off of the list but if they didn’t make it I would lose any sleep.

Royce Da 5'9": "Street Hop" NYC (Part 1) - Talks In Depth About Shady Records, Young Money...

Royce Talks about the potential of Slaughterhouse signing  to Shady records and what that could mean for hip hop. He says it would bring a balance back to hip hop because they would have the right machine backing them. Again however he says this is all hypothetical nothing is guaranteed.

“Who’s to say Slaughterhouse and Eminem ain’t did a record already?” And then he laughed. I caught up with Slaughterhouse member and Detroit emcee Royce Da 5′9 yesterday after his MTV interview made hip-hop headlines when he confirmed the Shady Records rumors. He answered three of the biggest questions fans have been asking and compared the situation to what Young Money has been able to do, which, in my opinion, was a great analogy. He finished by saying, “Slaughterhouse signing to Shady Records is not a guarantee to me or to Slaughterhouse.”

Mariah Carey - Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

  8. It’s a Wrap: qui i toni si fanno quasi blues.
  9. Up Out My Face: uptempo frizzante, uno degli episodi più easy dell’album.
  10. Up Out My Face (Reprise) con la melodia proposta in salsa banda con le majorettes.
  11. More Tha Just Friends: questa campiona One More Chance del compianto The Notorious B.I.G. al servizio di un testo particolarmente divertente e ricco di citazioni multilingua.
  12. The Impossible: qui la noia inizia a farsi sentire pesantemente. E’ l’ennesimo episodio di r&b rallentatissimo: evitabile.
  13. The Impossible (The Reprise): anche un reprise? quando è troppo è troppo!
  17. I Want To Know What Love Is: secondo singolo estratto (ve ne avevo parlato QUI).

DRAKE FT. KANYE, WEEZY, & EMINEM "FOREVER" VIDEO!

Drake Forever Poster

The music video aimed to support Drake’s single “Forever”, which is the theme song for LeBron James’ forthcoming documentary “More Than a Game”, has just been debuted. The premiere of the video comes more than two weeks after two on-set pictures taken during the shooting of the clip were posted on the Twitter page of a fan who goes by the name iLuvlola.
More than 6 minutes long, the music video reportedly shot in a club in Miami in early September, was produced by Boi-1da and directed by Hype Williams. It mostly features scenes captured inside a huge night club which is packed with partygoers. Basketball star LeBron is featured at the very beginning of the video. He is shown sitting inside a car with laptop on his laps as Drake begins singing the song.

Hip-hop artist Kanye West makes a cameo in the music video. He is videotaped singing some verses being surrounded by fireworks. Lil Wayne is seen in the clip singing in between sexy girls. Eminem is featured rapping in the companion of some other male stars. On top of all, the music video also shows clips of LeBron during his high school years and as a kid playing basketball. Forever - LeBron James x Drake x kanYe West x Lil Wayne x Eminem | Video

The video for the biggest song of the year is here. Drizzy, Yeezy, Weezy, and Em all make their appearances in order while highlights of LeBron’s early life are shown throughout the video. The video is probably not up to par with the song, as the visuals get a little hectic, especially during Drake’s verse, but it will do. LeBron playing online poker at the beginning of the video doesn’t make sense either, but hey its a dope song. Close your eyes if it bothers you that much I guess.

Funny Vlog from Mr. Crustified Dibbs where he does his best Joe Budden impersonation, touches on how the music industry has Hip-Hop all fucked up, racist e-mails, Lil Wayne being over-rated and name dropping.

VMAs

I usually don’t watch MTV’s Video Music Awards, mainly because I don’t watch videos, and I think most music they play sucks anyway, but this year I decided to at least watch some of it, man I’m glad I did.  I’m even more happy that I DVR-ed it so I can see all the crazy shenanigans I missed because of Sunday Night Football.  These are the things I did see though….

First of all, I’ve never been a Madonna fan, until now.  Her opening speech/monologue was perfectly immaculate.  It both humanized and exhausted and Michael Jackson to his rightful place, King.  Long live his legacy!  I’m glad to say that I share her birthday after that one.

The opening performance was a tribute to that legacy.  When the dancing paused and that white washed Scream video began to play the crowd went nuts.  Janet Jackson gave probably one of the most emotion filled performances of her life, even more so than when JT ripped her titty out at the Super Bowl, HA!

As an aside, that video effect at the end, where MJ and JJ were standing hugging each other, and the picture blacked out to only show MJ’s face…..DOPE.

Then the show really began.  I’d like to say that, as a host, I love Russell Brand.  He’s genius.  He hosted the show well, and kept me entertained both with his jokes and the mannerisms of a heroine junkie.

I was excited to see that Wale and UCB were doing the music for the night, DC stand up!  Did anyone else notice though that the crowd didn’t seem to be getting into it though?  MTV just doesn’t understand that DC flavor, anyone that keeps up with America’s Best Dance Crew knows what I’m talking about.  Anyways……

The next thing I saw was Taylor Swift winning her award, followed immediately by the most ignorant thing I’ve seen in my life.  Kanye West.  Don’t get me wrong I like his music, and love his beats, but with each display of such heightened ignorance it’s harder and harder to support the brotha.  I’m not a Taylor Swift fan, in fact I sort of despise country music, but that’s irrelevant.  Somewhere, thousands of people voted for her song/video to win.  While Beyonce’s video might have been better to some, it wasn’t better to the majority, Taylor Swift won fair and square.  I think Kanye’s outburst was more about Kanye not winning ANYTHING than it was about Beyonce not winning, here’s why, who remembers this clip from 2007’s VMAs…

…I thought you were done with MTV and “this pop shit” Kanye.   Moreover, if it wasn’t about himself, Kanye, why are you so concerned with Beyonce winning?  She’s already on top of the world.  Get off of Jay-Z’s d!c% already.

Speaking of Beyonce, she killed her performance.  Something about about 100 half-naked women gyrating is pretty cool, what could that be?  Nah seriously though, it was a good performance.  Also, Beyonce deserves all the praise in the world for being a classy and honorable woman.  She tried her best to right the wrongs that Kanye unleashed with his tirade.  It really showed her in a light that we don’t get to see her in.  I gained a lot of respect for her last night.  Big ups B!

Somewhere else in the night of Video Music accolades Pink wanted the world to know that she’s phasing music out and taking up the art of the trapeze full-time.  HAHA just kidding, but what was all that about?  I get it.  I’m safe, up high, nothing can touch me….I have two words for her though….OWEN HART.

Moving on.  Lady GaGa.  WTF.  That chick is crazy daring.  I feel her, not her outfits, and not really her music either.  Her voice was a lot better than I thought it was though.  Any ideas what was up with the blood though?  I also thought it was kinda funny that she dedicated her award to “the gays” with Eminem next to her, all he could do was nod.

Also, big up to Eminem on his award.  It’s been a long time is right my dude.  Don’t like the song you won it with, but hey, I’m glad you won, now give me some more new music.

All in all, that’s about all I remember seeing during my first run through of the VMA’s.  I’ll get to watching it in it’s entirety (minus commercials of course, I LOVE my DVR) probably Tuesday night.  Nothing comes on TV on Tuesdays, nothing good at least, and tonight’s a double header on Monday Night Football.  Football is definitely more important.

I’m ready for some football, are you?!

Eminem Wins At The 2009 MTV VMA's And Salutes Proof (R.I.P.)

Eminem won the MTV award for Best Hip Hip Video last night for “We Made You”, off of newly released “Relapse” LP, which spoofs US Vice-Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin, Amy Winehouse and Jessica Simpson.

Accepting his award he thanked his fans and Dr Dre, among others, and dedicated the award to the late rapper and lifetime friend Proof, who was fatally shot in 2006, saying: “Proof, this one’s for you.”

While paying tribute at Proofs’ Funeral in 06, Eminem stated… “Proof, he loved people, and people loved him. He was just a people magnet. When you first met him, you wanted to know more about him,” said Eminem, who wore a black suit and occasionally wiped his eye as he stood by the gold-colored casket. “Without Proof, there would be no Eminem, no Slim Shady and no D12. You’re the man.”

In “The Way I Am” fragt er, wer wirklich Schuld an dem sogenannten Amoklauf in der Columbine High hat: “Where were the parents at?”, in “Mosh” sagt er ganz öffentlich “Fuck Bush!”

Außerdem sagt Eminem z.B. in “Never Enough” folgendes:
“Believe it or not, I thank my mom for how she raised me
In the neighborhood daily, they jumped and chased me…”

In diesem Sinne, lest mich beim nächsten Beitrag wieder! Wer weiß, um was es dann geht?

So long!
